Local Company Receives Safety Award

June 27, 2006 - Longview, Texas: 19 area businesses were honored for excellence in safety training April 27th, by the Safety Council of East Texas. Only work performed in the East Texas area for the year 2005 by member companies, were eligible for an award.

The 14 year-old nonprofit company was formed by local contractors and industries to promote and improve workplace safety through safety training. The Safety Council of East Texas is a board member of the national nonprofit Association of Reciprocal Safety Councils.

Norit Americas a manufacturer of activated carbon received the award for achieving an incident rate improvement of greater that 25%.

Rick Wall, Council Director said, " the criteria to qualify for an award was stringent, and based upon the federal OSHA injury reporting requirements. Norit Americas met the award requirements and we are excited to recognize their efforts in promoting safety training in the workplace. The companies receiving these awards understand that safety training is required by law and it is good business to provide a safe and healthful workplace for their employees."

Clay Lassen, Safety and Health Manager, of Norit Americas said " To achieve such a substantial reduction in our incident rate has been a team effort involving every single person at the plant. I look forward to the future at Norit as the safety culture continues to evolve and we eliminate incidents all together."

The keynote speaker was Kathryn Delaney, Director for Region VI for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Department of Labor, North Texas Area. She discussed the OSHA requirement for compliance safety training and how it is different from safety education. She also discussed how workplace safety must reach a new generation of workers and can through mentoring.
