Food

Whether you need to decolorize a liquid syrup or juice, purify edible oils, deodorize proteins or any number of other food processes that require very pure, specialized activated carbons, the purity of your food product is of utmost importance.

  • Sugar - beet or cane, liquid or reclaim
Cane and beet sugar syrups typically require decolorization before the syrup is ready for final use or further processed. Norit activated carbons are dedicated to adsorb plant pigments from the sugar cane (polyphenols) and colors created during processing. Activated carbon has the capability to remove non-colorant impurities as well, such as amino acids, poly saccharides, etc. Norit powder activated carbons are very flexible and forgiving in use and are particularly beneficial when the raw cane sugar comes from different regions and the refining conditions must be adapted to the raw cane sugar quality.

  • High Fructose Corn Sweeteners
Norit activated carbons are widely used for decolorization and improvement of the sensory characteristics of high fructose corn syrup. Norit grades can be used to meet the high standards on color and sensory characteristics required for soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, etc.

  • Sweeteners - artificial
Artificial sweeteners have unique and diverse purification demands due to the wide variety of manufacturing processes. So whether the artificial sweetener is derived from fructose, starch, or a synthetic process, Norit has the optimum activated carbon to remove color, and adsorb undesirable molecules, while maintaining the sensory characteristics required by this market.

  • Edible Oils, Fish Oil & Fats
Edible oils and fish oils benefit from Norit powder activated carbon by removing natural pigments such as carotenoids, chlorophylls and xanthophylls. Especially in coconut and sunflower oil refining, the use of specialized Norit carbons is inevitable when carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) must be removed in case the deodorizer is not capable to bring down the PAH content below acceptable limits.

  • Flavors & Aromas
Hydrolyzed vegetable proteins (HVPs) or monosodium glutamate (MSG) are widely processed into flavorings destined for use, for example, in the kitchen. HVP is typically decolorized with dedicated powdered Norit activated carbon.

For MSG purification both powder and granular activated carbons can be used, depending on the process conditions, either to purify the MSG/glutamic acid solution or to decolorize the recycling mother liquor. Norit offers a wide variety of activated carbons with different pore structures and particle sizes to purify flavors and aromas.

  • Lactose
Norit activated carbons are used in a typical batch process for the purification of edible lactose to obtain pharmaceutical grade lactose with pure white crystals. Edible lactose or milk sugar is generally produced from liquid whey containing about 6.5 % dry matter. It is clarified and then concentrated to 55-65 % total solids. Upon cooling, the greater part crystallizes as lactose monohydrate. The purpose for the activated carbon is to remove riboflavin (vitamin B2, yellow color), residual proteins and their degradation products from the edible lactose. Adsorption of Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF, being a color precursor) is beneficial to minimize its accumulation in recirculating mother process liquor and therefore increasing the color.
