Applications in the chemical industry are countless. Your final product might need an impurity removed to meet specifications or you may have a contaminant in an intermediary product that needs removed to prevent fouling of a downstream process. Activated carbon is used in a variety of forms from a fixed bed as a catalyst, in agricultural processes to powder injection for contaminant removal.

  • Acids
    In the production of high quality chemical products, some residue or unwanted color often remains. These impurities must be removed without imparting any additional impurities or minerals. Norit offers many extremely pure products to remove the unwanted impurities.

  • Electroplating
    Norit activated carbons are used to maintain purity of electroplating baths. A build up of soluble organic impurities occurs during normal operation and Norit activated carbons are highly effective at removing these impurities.

  • Glycols
    The purification of antifreeze, to obtain a product that meets or exceeds OEM specifications, is a multi-step process with several techniques available at each stage. The technologies selected for each step are chosen based on the challenges presented by the feedstock. Most recyclers use activated carbon in at least one point, if not two points in their process.

  • Oleochemicals
    Norit activated carbons are very suitable for the purification of oleochemicals such as fatty acids, fatty acid methyl esters, fatty alcohols, fatty amines and glycerols. These oleochemicals are produced through high-pressure splitting and transesterification of edible oils and fats. Powder and granular activated carbons are commonly used in preventing ion exchange from fouling or to upgrade refined glycerin to the highest purity standards. Fatty acids and fatty acid derivatives are increasingly being purified by Norit activated carbons.

  • Dry Cleaning
    Dry cleaning solvents must be continually decolorized to maintain their effectiveness. Norit activated carbons are highly effective at removing the buildup of color molecules during normal operations.

  • Mining
    In the field of mining the major use of activated carbon is in gold recovery. Here granular activated carbon is used for adsorption of the gold-cyanide complex.   • Hydrocarbon sweetening
    Norit activated carbons are used as catalyst carriers in the licensed Hydrocarbon sweetening process. This process involves the mercaptans sweetening of heavier fractions and the catalytic extraction of mercaptans from light refinery products.
